David as a type of Christ

And moreover in time past, even when Saul was king, thou wast he that leddest out and broughtest in Israel: and the LORD thy God said unto thee, Thou shalt feed my people Israel, and thou shalt be ruler over my people Israel. 1 Chronicles 11:2–3

The LORD calls David to 'feed' (shepherd) His people and rule them, and David is anointed king. 'Messiah' means 'Anointed One', and the prophets later call the coming Messiah 'my servant David', the one true Shepherd. So David's anointing as shepherd-king looks forward to Jesus.

Lord of Hosts

Lord of Hosts — Jehovah, commander of heaven's armies

So David waxed greater and greater: for the LORD of hosts was with him. 1 Chronicles 11:9

David's success comes from the LORD of hosts being with him. In Latter-day Saint teaching, the LORD of hosts is Jehovah, the premortal Jesus Christ.

Savior

And they set themselves in the midst of that parcel, and delivered it, and slew the Philistines; and the LORD saved them by a great deliverance. 1 Chronicles 11:14

The victory in the barley field is credited to the LORD, who 'saved them by a great deliverance.' Jehovah, the premortal Christ, shows here the saving power He would later show fully as the Savior.
