Acts 19

Jesus Christ

Then said Paul, John verily baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people, that they should believe on him which should come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus. Acts 19:4

Paul identifies the 'one coming after' John the Baptist as Christ Jesus. John's whole mission was to point people to the Savior.

Take His Name

When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. Acts 19:5

These disciples are baptized again by proper authority, this time in the name of Jesus Christ. Baptism is the ordinance where we covenant to take His name upon us.

And this continued by the space of two years; so that all they which dwelt in Asia heard the word of the Lord Jesus, both Jews and Greeks. Acts 19:10

In two years of teaching, the message about the Lord Jesus reaches the whole province of Asia. His word goes to Jews and Gentiles alike.

Then certain of the vagabond Jews, exorcists, took upon them to call over them which had evil spirits the name of the LORD Jesus, saying, We adjure you by Jesus whom Paul preacheth. Acts 19:13–15

Men without faith or authority try to use Jesus' name like a magic formula and are overpowered. Even the evil spirit recognizes Jesus, but His name has power only through those He has authorized.

And this was known to all the Jews and Greeks also dwelling at Ephesus; and fear fell on them all, and the name of the Lord Jesus was magnified. Acts 19:17

The failure of the false exorcists makes people honor the name of the Lord Jesus even more. Many then give up their occult practices (vv. 18-19).
