Helaman 10

Jehovah

Blessed art thou, Nephi, for those things which thou hast done; for I have beheld how thou hast with unwearyingness declared the word, which I have given unto thee, unto this people. And thou hast not feared them, and hast not sought thine own life, but hast sought my will, and to keep my commandments. Helaman 10:4–6

A voice comes to the discouraged prophet and speaks as God in the first person. This is the Lord of Israel, the premortal Christ, who knows Nephi's unwearied service and blesses him forever.

How we know: the verse itself names Him

Jehovah

Behold, I give unto you power, that whatsoever ye shall seal on earth shall be sealed in heaven; and whatsoever ye shall loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven; and thus shall ye have power among this people. Helaman 10:7

The Lord gives Nephi the sealing power in nearly the same words Jesus used when He promised Peter the keys of the kingdom. The same Lord gives the same power in both hemispheres.

• alludes to Matthew 16:19 — Jesus to Peter: 'whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven' (same wording, same giver).
• the same title in D&C 132:46 — The Lord gives Joseph Smith the same sealing power in the same terms.

Jehovah

Almighty: all-powerful (El Shaddai, 'God Almighty')

And now behold, I command you, that ye shall go and declare unto this people, that thus saith the Lord God, who is the Almighty: Except ye repent ye shall be smitten, even unto destruction. Helaman 10:11

Nephi's message carries the Lord's own authority, 'the Lord God, who is the Almighty.' Christ calls Himself 'the Almighty' in scripture, and Jehovah is the Lord who sends prophets with 'thus saith the Lord.'

How we know: Jehovah is the premortal Christ (Abraham 1:16; D&C 110:3–4)
