Isaiah 17

Lord of Hosts

Lord of Hosts — Jehovah, commander of the armies of heaven

The fortress also shall cease from Ephraim, and the kingdom from Damascus, and the remnant of Syria: they shall be as the glory of the children of Israel, saith the LORD of hosts. Isaiah 17:3–6

Isaiah speaks for the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel (Jehovah), who promises that a small remnant will remain like gleanings after harvest.

How we know: the verse itself names Him

Holy One of Israel

Holy One of Israel — the holy God who covenanted with Israel; Jesus Christ

At that day shall a man look to his Maker, and his eyes shall have respect to the Holy One of Israel. Isaiah 17:7

In that day people will turn from man-made idols to look to their Maker, the Holy One of Israel. The Book of Mormon identifies the Holy One of Israel as Jesus Christ, the Creator.

How we know: the verse itself names Him

• the same title in 2 Nephi 9:41 — the keeper of the gate is the Holy One of Israel
• the same title in 1 Nephi 22:21 — the prophet Moses spoke of was the Holy One of Israel

Rock

Rock — the sure, unmoving foundation and refuge

Because thou hast forgotten the God of thy salvation, and hast not been mindful of the rock of thy strength, therefore shalt thou plant pleasant plants, and shalt set it with strange slips: Isaiah 17:10

Israel's trouble came from forgetting the God of their salvation, the Rock of their strength. Latter-day Saints know that Rock as Jesus Christ, the sure foundation.

How we know: a footnote points to Him

• the same title in Helaman 5:12 — build upon the rock of our Redeemer, who is Christ
• the same title in 1 Corinthians 10:4 — that Rock was Christ
