Jonah 2

Sign of Jonah

And said, I cried by reason of mine affliction unto the LORD, and he heard me; out of the belly of hell cried I, and thou heardest my voice. Jonah 2:2–6

Jonah describes going down into the 'belly of hell' and being brought up from corruption. This is the pattern Jesus fulfilled: He went into death and the spirit world, and the Father did not leave His body to corruption but raised Him up.

Savior

LORD (Jehovah) — the source of salvation

But I will sacrifice unto thee with the voice of thanksgiving; I will pay that that I have vowed. Salvation is of the LORD. Jonah 2:9

Jonah's prayer climaxes in a simple testimony: salvation comes from the LORD. Latter-day Saints know that Jehovah is Jesus Christ, and that salvation comes only in and through Him.

Resurrection

And the LORD spake unto the fish, and it vomited out Jonah upon the dry land. Jonah 2:10

After three days Jonah comes out of the deep alive onto dry land. Jesus pointed to this sign as a picture of His own coming forth from the tomb on the third day.
