Proverbs 29

Light of Christ

The poor and the deceitful man meet together: the LORD lighteneth both their eyes. Proverbs 29:13

The LORD gives light to everyone, poor or deceitful alike. Latter-day Saints see this as the Light of Christ that lights every person who comes into the world.

How we know: Jehovah is the premortal Christ (Abraham 1:16; D&C 110:3–4)

• the same title in John 1:9 — That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world.
• the same title in D&C 93:2 — The true light that lighteth every man that cometh into the world.

Righteous king (type of Christ)

The king that faithfully judgeth the poor, his throne shall be established for ever. Proverbs 29:14

Any king who judges the poor faithfully gains a lasting throne, but only one King's throne is literally established for ever: the Messiah, who judges the poor with righteousness.

• alluded to by Isaiah 11:4 — With righteousness shall he judge the poor.
• fulfilled by Luke 1:32-33 — The throne of his father David; of his kingdom there shall be no end.

Jehovah

Jehovah — the covenant name, rendered LORD

The fear of man bringeth a snare: but whoso putteth his trust in the LORD shall be safe. Proverbs 29:25–26

Fearing people is a trap, but trusting the LORD makes us safe, and the final verdict on every life comes from Him, not from human rulers. Jehovah, Jesus Christ, is our refuge and our Judge.

How we know: Jehovah is the premortal Christ (Abraham 1:16; D&C 110:3–4)
