1 Kings 19

Bread of Life

And as he lay and slept under a juniper tree, behold, then an angel touched him, and said unto him, Arise and eat. 1 Kings 19:5–8

Bread and water from heaven give the worn-out prophet strength for a journey 'too great for thee.' It echoes the manna and Christ, the Bread of Life, who gives strength we cannot supply ourselves. The forty days recall Moses on the mount and the Savior's fast in the wilderness.

Jehovah

Jehovah — 'I AM', the eternal, self-existent God

And he said, Go forth, and stand upon the mount before the LORD. And, behold, the LORD passed by, and a great and strong wind rent the mountains, and brake in pieces the rocks before the LORD; but the LORD was not in the wind: and after the wind an earthquake; but the LORD was not in the earthquake: 1 Kings 19:11–13

On Horeb (Sinai), Jehovah, the premortal Christ, passes by Elijah as He once passed by Moses. He is not in the wind, the earthquake, or the fire but in a still small voice, which is how He usually speaks to His servants.

Jehovah

Jehovah — 'I AM', the eternal, self-existent God

Yet I have left me seven thousand in Israel, all the knees which have not bowed unto Baal, and every mouth which hath not kissed him. 1 Kings 19:18

Jehovah answers Elijah's 'I, even I only, am left' by telling him He has kept seven thousand faithful. Paul quotes this to show the Lord always keeps a remnant by grace.

Christ's call to discipleship

So he departed thence, and found Elisha the son of Shaphat, who was plowing with twelve yoke of oxen before him, and he with the twelfth: and Elijah passed by him, and cast his mantle upon him. 1 Kings 19:19–21

Elisha leaves his plow, burns his oxen, and follows Elijah. Jesus draws on this call when a would-be disciple asks to say goodbye at home first and the Savior answers that no one who puts his hand to the plough and looks back is fit for the kingdom.
