Savior

And Hannah prayed, and said, My heart rejoiceth in the LORD, mine horn is exalted in the LORD: my mouth is enlarged over mine enemies; because I rejoice in thy salvation. 1 Samuel 2:1

Hannah rejoices in the Lord's salvation (Hebrew yeshuah, the root of the name Jesus/Yeshua). Mary sang the same joy when she carried the Savior, and the Church footnote on this very phrase sends the reader to her song.

Rock

Rock — the sure foundation of salvation

There is none holy as the LORD: for there is none beside thee: neither is there any rock like our God. 1 Samuel 2:2

Hannah calls Jehovah the Rock and the Holy One without equal. The Church footnote sends the reader to Topical Guide 'Rock' and 'Cornerstone', and latter-day scripture teaches that the rock we must build on is Christ our Redeemer.

Hannah says the Lord knows everything and weighs what people actually do. The Church footnote on 'actions' points to the risen Christ's own words that all men will be drawn to Him 'that they may be judged according to their works' — the weighing is done by Jesus Christ.

Resurrection

The LORD killeth, and maketh alive: he bringeth down to the grave, and bringeth up. 1 Samuel 2:6

Jehovah holds power over death and the grave, bringing people down and bringing them up again. The Church footnote reads this as resurrection doctrine and sends the reader to Topical Guide 'Jesus Christ, Resurrection': Christ, who is Jehovah, broke the bands of death.

Jehovah

The LORD maketh poor, and maketh rich: he bringeth low, and lifteth up. 1 Samuel 2:7–8

Jehovah lifts the lowly and humbles the proud. Mary took up these very words when she praised God for the Child she carried.

Messiah

Messiah — the Anointed One

The adversaries of the LORD shall be broken to pieces; out of heaven shall he thunder upon them: the LORD shall judge the ends of the earth; and he shall give strength unto his king, and exalt the horn of his anointed. 1 Samuel 2:10

Before Israel even had a king, Hannah prophesies of the Lord's King and His Anointed. The Church footnote notes that the Greek Old Testament renders this word christos — Christ. A 'horn' means power, and Zacharias later praised God for raising up 'an horn of salvation' in Jesus.

Judgment by Christ

Advocate

If one man sin against another, the judge shall judge him: but if a man sin against the LORD, who shall intreat for him? Notwithstanding they hearkened not unto the voice of their father, because the LORD would slay them. 1 Samuel 2:25

Eli asks who can plead for a person who sins against God Himself. The gospel's answer is Jesus Christ, our Advocate with the Father, who pleads our cause.

Jesus (the growing child)

And the child Samuel grew on, and was in favour both with the LORD, and also with men. 1 Samuel 2:26

Luke describes the boy Jesus in nearly the same words, drawing a line from the young temple servant Samuel to the young Savior who grew in favour with God and man. The Church footnote makes the link itself.

Jehovah

And there came a man of God unto Eli, and said unto him, Thus saith the LORD, Did I plainly appear unto the house of thy father, when they were in Egypt in Pharaoh’s house? 1 Samuel 2:27–30

A man of God speaks for Jehovah, who appeared to Israel in Egypt and chose Aaron's house as priests. Jehovah, the premortal Christ, honours those who honour Him.

High Priest

And I will raise me up a faithful priest, that shall do according to that which is in mine heart and in my mind: and I will build him a sure house; and he shall walk before mine anointed for ever. 1 Samuel 2:35

The Lord promises a faithful priest to replace Eli's corrupt line. It was fulfilled in Zadok, but only Jesus Christ is the perfectly faithful High Priest who does all that is in His Father's heart and mind.

Messiah

'Mine anointed' first meant Israel's future anointed kings, but the phrase 'for ever' reaches past any mortal king to the eternal Anointed One, the Messiah.
