1 Samuel 7

Jehovah

And Samuel spake unto all the house of Israel, saying, If ye do return unto the LORD with all your hearts, then put away the strange gods and Ashtaroth from among you, and prepare your hearts unto the LORD, and serve him only: and he will deliver you out of the hand of the Philistines. 1 Samuel 7:3

Samuel promises that Jehovah will deliver Israel if they turn to Him with their whole hearts. The premortal Christ is the Deliverer who answers real repentance.

How we know: Jehovah is the premortal Christ (Abraham 1:16; D&C 110:3–4)

Lamb of God

And Samuel took a sucking lamb, and offered it for a burnt offering wholly unto the LORD: and Samuel cried unto the LORD for Israel; and the LORD heard him. 1 Samuel 7:9–10

A young lamb is offered wholly to the Lord while Samuel pleads for the people, and deliverance follows. The offering points to Jesus Christ, the Lamb of God, whose sacrifice and intercession save His people from enemies they cannot beat alone.

How we know: the verse itself names Him

• interpreted by Moses 5:7 — Sacrifice is 'a similitude of the sacrifice of the Only Begotten of the Father'.
• a type of what is in John 1:29 — 'Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world'.

Stone of Help (Ebenezer)

Ebenezer — stone of help

Then Samuel took a stone, and set it between Mizpeh and Shen, and called the name of it Ebenezer, saying, Hitherto hath the LORD helped us. 1 Samuel 7:12

Samuel sets up a stone to remember that Jehovah helped them. It is a soft echo of the Lord as the Stone and Rock of help that Israel's victories rest on.
