Jehovah

Then David put garrisons in Syria of Damascus: and the Syrians became servants to David, and brought gifts. And the LORD preserved David whithersoever he went. 2 Samuel 8:6

The LORD (Jehovah) keeps His covenant promise from chapter 7 to be with David wherever he goes. The same line is repeated in verse 14.

How we know: Jehovah is the premortal Christ (Abraham 1:16; D&C 110:3–4)

• fulfils 2 Samuel 7:9 — 'I was with thee whithersoever thou wentest.'

And he put garrisons in Edom; throughout all Edom put he garrisons, and all they of Edom became David’s servants. And the LORD preserved David whithersoever he went. 2 Samuel 8:14

The refrain repeats: Jehovah, the premortal Christ, is the source of David's protection and success.

How we know: Jehovah is the premortal Christ (Abraham 1:16; D&C 110:3–4)

David as type of the Righteous King

And David reigned over all Israel; and David executed judgment and justice unto all his people. 2 Samuel 8:15

At his best, David rules with judgment and justice. The prophets use this same phrase for the promised Branch of David, the Messiah, whose reign will be perfectly just.
