Jehovah

Jehovah — the covenant name, "I AM" / "He who is"

The LORD our God spake unto us in Horeb, saying, Ye have dwelt long enough in this mount: Deuteronomy 1:6–8

The LORD who spoke at Horeb and swore the land to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob is Jehovah, the premortal Jesus Christ. He is the God who made the covenant with the fathers and here tells Israel to move forward into it.

Jehovah

The LORD your God which goeth before you, he shall fight for you, according to all that he did for you in Egypt before your eyes; Deuteronomy 1:30–31

Jehovah goes ahead of His people, fights their battles, and carries them the whole way like a father carrying his child. It is a tender picture of the Savior who bears His people and their burdens.

Jehovah

Yet in this thing ye did not believe the LORD your God, Deuteronomy 1:32–33

Jehovah personally led Israel in the pillar of fire and cloud, choosing each camp and showing the way. Nephi says plainly that the one going before them, giving light by night, was their Redeemer.

Joshua (type of Jesus)

Joshua — "Jehovah saves"; the Hebrew form of the name Jesus

But Joshua the son of Nun, which standeth before thee, he shall go in thither: encourage him: for he shall cause Israel to inherit it. Deuteronomy 1:38

Moses, who gave the law, cannot bring Israel into the promised land; Joshua, whose name is the same as Jesus, is the one who causes Israel to inherit it. It is a picture of how Christ, not the law alone, brings us into our eternal inheritance.
