Deuteronomy 29

Jehovah

Jehovah (LORD) — 'I AM', the covenant God of Israel

And I have led you forty years in the wilderness: your clothes are not waxen old upon you, and thy shoe is not waxen old upon thy foot. Deuteronomy 29:5–6

Moses slips into the Lord's own voice: 'I have led you... that ye might know that I am the LORD your God.' The One who kept Israel's clothes from wearing out and sustained them without bread is Jehovah, the premortal Christ.

  • alluded to by Nehemiah 9:21 — Nehemiah's later prayer recalls this: 'forty years didst thou sustain them in the wilderness... their clothes waxed not old.'
  • the same event in Deuteronomy 8:3-4 — The same forty years of wilderness care: manna, and raiment that 'waxed not old upon thee.'

Jehovah

Jehovah (LORD) — the covenant name

That thou shouldest enter into covenant with the LORD thy God, and into his oath, which the LORD thy God maketh with thee this day: Deuteronomy 29:12–13

Every Israelite, from the captains to the drawers of water, enters covenant with the LORD — the same God who swore to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Latter-day Saints understand that covenant God to be Jehovah, Jesus Christ.

How we know: Jehovah is the premortal Christ (Abraham 1:16; D&C 110:3–4) · the verse itself names Him · a footnote points to Him · another scripture interprets it of Him

  • the same title in Abraham 1:16 — The covenant God names Himself to Abraham: 'my name is Jehovah.'
  • alludes to Exodus 6:7 — The covenant formula this verse repeats — 'I will take you to me for a people, and I will be to you a God' (the Church footnote on v. 13).
