Doctrine and Covenants 10

Ministry of Jesus (His teachings)

Pray always, that you may come off conqueror; yea, that you may conquer Satan, and that you may escape the hands of the servants of Satan that do uphold his work. Doctrine and Covenants 10:5

The Lord repeats His counsel to pray always so as not to be overcome by Satan, as He taught His disciples in Jerusalem and among the Nephites.

Jehovah (the Lord thy God)

For behold, he has put it into their hearts to get thee to tempt the Lord thy God, in asking to translate it over again. Doctrine and Covenants 10:15

The Lord who is speaking is "the Lord thy God." Satan's trap echoes the wilderness, where Jesus answered the devil that one must not tempt the Lord God.

Light of the World

And their hearts are corrupt, and full of wickedness and abominations; and they love darkness rather than light, because their deeds are evil; therefore they will not ask of me. Doctrine and Covenants 10:21

Christ uses His own words to Nicodemus: the light has come, but the wicked prefer darkness and will not come to Him.

Jehovah (the Lord thy God)

Now, behold, they have altered these words, because Satan saith unto them: He hath deceived you—and thus he flattereth them away to do iniquity, to get thee to tempt the Lord thy God. Doctrine and Covenants 10:29

Repeats verse 15: the Lord speaking is Joseph's God, whom Satan wants him to tempt.

Christ's Gospel among the Nephites

And, behold, all the remainder of this work does contain all those parts of my gospel which my holy prophets, yea, and also my disciples, desired in their prayers should come forth unto this people. Doctrine and Covenants 10:46–50

Christ says the gospel in the Book of Mormon is His, given to Nephite prophets and to His Nephite disciples, who prayed it would one day reach the Lamanites and all people so they could have eternal life.

Jesus Christ

The Lord again identifies Himself by name as the speaker of the revelation.

Son of God

Son of God — the literal Son of the Father

Behold, I am Jesus Christ, the Son of God. I came unto mine own, and mine own received me not. Doctrine and Covenants 10:57

He testifies He is the Son of God.

Ministry of Jesus (rejected by His own)

Behold, I am Jesus Christ, the Son of God. I came unto mine own, and mine own received me not. Doctrine and Covenants 10:57

Jesus recalls His rejection by His own people in mortality.

Light of the World

Light — the source of truth and life that darkness cannot overcome

I am the light which shineth in darkness, and the darkness comprehendeth it not. Doctrine and Covenants 10:58

Christ declares He is the light that darkness cannot understand or overcome, placed right after describing Satan's dark plot.

Good Shepherd

Good Shepherd — the one who knows, gathers, and lays down His life for His sheep

I am he who said—Other sheep have I which are not of this fold—unto my disciples, and many there were that understood me not. Doctrine and Covenants 10:59–60

The Good Shepherd identifies Himself as the one who spoke of "other sheep" and reveals that the Nephites, a branch of Israel, were those sheep.

Christ's Ministry to the Nephites

And I will bring to light their marvelous works, which they did in my name; Doctrine and Covenants 10:61–63

Christ promises the Book of Mormon will reveal the gospel He ministered to the Nephites and settle contention over His doctrine.

Jesus Christ (the gathering hen)

For, behold, I will gather them as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings, if they will not harden their hearts; Doctrine and Covenants 10:65

Jesus uses the tender image He used over Jerusalem and among the Nephites: He longs to gather and shelter His people if they will let Him.

Living Water

Yea, if they will come, they may, and partake of the waters of life freely. Doctrine and Covenants 10:66

The waters of life are a symbol of Christ and the eternal life He gives freely to all who come to Him.

Doctrine of Christ

Behold, this is my doctrine—whosoever repenteth and cometh unto me, the same is my church. Doctrine and Covenants 10:67–68

Christ defines His doctrine and His Church simply: all who repent and come unto Him. Adding to it or taking from it is not of Him.

Rock

Rock — the sure foundation that cannot fail

And now, behold, whosoever is of my church, and endureth of my church to the end, him will I establish upon my rock, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against them. Doctrine and Covenants 10:69

Christ Himself is the rock on which He establishes those who endure; hell cannot overpower them.

Life and Light of the World — the source of eternal life and of truth

The revelation closes by naming its speaker with His own title from the Book of Mormon: the life and light of the world.

Redeemer

Redeemer — one who buys back, ransoms, and sets free
