Redeemer

Redeemer — one who buys back, ransoms, and sets free

Oliver Cowdery, verily, verily, I say unto you, that assuredly as the Lord liveth, who is your God and your Redeemer, even so surely shall you receive a knowledge of whatsoever things you shall ask in faith, with an honest heart, believing that you shall receive a knowledge concerning the engravings of old records, which are ancient, which contain those parts of my scripture of which has been spoken by the manifestation of my Spirit. Doctrine and Covenants 8:1

The Lord who promises Oliver revelation is the living God and his Redeemer, Jesus Christ, who paid the price to free him.

How we know: the verse itself names Him

• alludes to Job 19:25 — "I know that my redeemer liveth."
• the same title in Isaiah 44:6 — "The LORD the King of Israel, and his redeemer the LORD of hosts."

Jesus Christ

Behold, it is I that have spoken it; and I am the same that spake unto you from the beginning. Amen. Doctrine and Covenants 8:12

Christ confirms He is the same one who has been speaking to Oliver all along, the Jesus Christ who named Himself in section 6.

How we know: the verse itself names Him

• alludes to D&C 6:21 — "I am Jesus Christ... I am the same that came unto mine own."
