Exodus 18

Jehovah the Deliverer

And Jethro said, Blessed be the LORD, who hath delivered you out of the hand of the Egyptians, and out of the hand of Pharaoh, who hath delivered the people from under the hand of the Egyptians. Exodus 18:10–11

Jethro, a priest, praises Jehovah for delivering Israel from bondage and confesses Him greater than all gods. Latter-day Saints understand this Deliverer to be the premortal Christ.

Moses as intercessor

Hearken now unto my voice, I will give thee counsel, and God shall be with thee: Be thou for the people to God-ward, that thou mayest bring the causes unto God: Exodus 18:19

Moses is to represent the people before God and bring their causes to Him. This softly echoes Christ, the one Mediator and Advocate who pleads our cause with the Father.

The Way

And thou shalt teach them ordinances and laws, and shalt shew them the way wherein they must walk, and the work that they must do. Exodus 18:20

Moses is to show Israel the way they must walk. The Church's footnote on 'way' points to Jesus' words, 'I am the way, the truth, and the life': the path God's law marks out leads to Christ.
