Habakkuk 1

Jehovah

Behold ye among the heathen, and regard, and wonder marvellously: for I will work a work in your days, which ye will not believe, though it be told you. Habakkuk 1:5

The LORD warns of a work so astonishing people would not believe it. Paul quoted this verse to warn listeners not to reject the marvelous work God had done through the death and Resurrection of Jesus.

Holy One of Israel

Holy One — the Holy One of Israel, perfectly set apart from sin

Art thou not from everlasting, O LORD my God, mine Holy One? we shall not die. O LORD, thou hast ordained them for judgment; and, O mighty God, thou hast established them for correction. Habakkuk 1:12

Habakkuk calls the everlasting LORD 'mine Holy One' and trusts that because of Him 'we shall not die.' The Holy One of Israel is Jesus Christ, whose life overcomes death.

Mighty God

Mighty God — in Hebrew here literally 'O Rock'

Art thou not from everlasting, O LORD my God, mine Holy One? we shall not die. O LORD, thou hast ordained them for judgment; and, O mighty God, thou hast established them for correction. Habakkuk 1:12

The KJV renders Habakkuk's address as 'O mighty God' (the Hebrew is 'O Rock'). Both are titles scripture gives to Jesus Christ: Isaiah names the promised Child 'The mighty God,' and Christ is the Rock of our salvation.
