Hosea 11

My Son Called Out of Egypt

When Israel was a child, then I loved him, and called my son out of Egypt. Hosea 11:1

Hosea first means the nation of Israel, God's covenant son, brought out of Egypt. Matthew teaches that this was also a pattern fulfilled when the child Jesus, the true Son, returned from Egypt; Israel's story foreshadowed His.

Jehovah Drawing His People with Love

Jehovah — the LORD, the eternal I AM

I drew them with cords of a man, with bands of love: and I was to them as they that take off the yoke on their jaws, and I laid meat unto them. Hosea 11:4

Jehovah leads His people like a loving parent, with human cords of kindness rather than force. It echoes how Jesus draws all people to Himself through love.

The Holy One in the Midst of Thee

How shall I give thee up, Ephraim? how shall I deliver thee, Israel? how shall I make thee as Admah? how shall I set thee as Zeboim? mine heart is turned within me, my repentings are kindled together. Hosea 11:8–9

Jehovah, the Holy One of Israel, cannot bear to give up His people and chooses mercy over deserved destruction. The Book of Mormon names the Holy One of Israel as Jesus Christ, the one who dwells among His people.

Jehovah Gathering Israel

Jehovah — the LORD, the eternal I AM

They shall walk after the LORD: he shall roar like a lion: when he shall roar, then the children shall tremble from the west. Hosea 11:10–11

Jehovah promises to call His scattered children home like a lion's roar, and they will come trembling from Egypt, Assyria, and the west. The latter-day gathering of Israel is gathering to Christ.
