Isaiah 7

Immanuel

Immanuel — God with us

Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel. Isaiah 7:14

Isaiah foretells a son born of a virgin whose name means God with us. Jesus, born of the virgin Mary, is God come to live among His people.

Immanuel the child

Butter and honey shall he eat, that he may know to refuse the evil, and choose the good. Isaiah 7:15–16

The child Immanuel grows up on simple food and learns to choose the good. In Ahaz's day it timed the sign; in its fuller meaning it describes the child Jesus growing in a humble home.
