Jeremiah 20

Jeremiah, the rejected prophet

Then Pashur smote Jeremiah the prophet, and put him in the stocks that were in the high gate of Benjamin, which was by the house of the LORD. Jeremiah 20:2–7

Jeremiah is struck by a chief officer of the temple and mocked every day for speaking God's word. His suffering as a rejected messenger softly foreshadows Jesus, who was struck in the high priest's house and mocked; some in Jesus' day even wondered if He was Jeremiah.

How we know: the verse itself names Him

• alludes to Matthew 16:14 — Some said Jesus was 'Jeremias, or one of the prophets.'
• a type of what is in Matthew 26:67-68 — Jesus is struck and mocked in the high priest's palace.

Jehovah

But the LORD is with me as a mighty terrible one: therefore my persecutors shall stumble, and they shall not prevail: they shall be greatly ashamed; for they shall not prosper: their everlasting confusion shall never be forgotten. Jeremiah 20:11–13

In his darkest moment Jeremiah trusts the LORD, Jehovah, as the mighty One who stands with him and delivers the poor. Latter-day Saints see this Deliverer as the premortal Christ.

How we know: Jehovah is the premortal Christ (Abraham 1:16; D&C 110:3–4)
