Jeremiah 30

David their King

David — beloved

But they shall serve the LORD their God, and David their king, whom I will raise up unto them. Jeremiah 30:9

Long after King David had died, the Lord promises to 'raise up' David as Israel's king. This points to the Messiah, the Son of David, who will reign over gathered Israel; Gabriel told Mary that Jesus would receive the throne of His father David.

How we know: the chapter heading names Him

• the same title in Ezekiel 37:24-25 — David my servant shall be king over them... for ever.
• the same title in Hosea 3:5 — Israel shall return and seek the LORD their God, and David their king, in the latter days.
• fulfilled by Luke 1:32-33 — The Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David.

Savior

Therefore fear thou not, O my servant Jacob, saith the LORD; neither be dismayed, O Israel: for, lo, I will save thee from afar, and thy seed from the land of their captivity; and Jacob shall return, and shall be in rest, and be quiet, and none shall make him afraid. Jeremiah 30:10–11

Jehovah tells frightened Israel He is with them to save them. The God who saves Israel here is the same Being who came as Jesus, whose name means 'Jehovah saves.'

Jehovah the Healer

For thus saith the LORD, Thy bruise is incurable, and thy wound is grievous. Jeremiah 30:12–17

Israel's sin-wound is incurable and no one can plead her cause, yet the Lord Himself promises to heal it. This echoes the gospel pattern: what no human remedy can heal, Christ heals, and He becomes the advocate no one else could be.

The Ruler Who Draws Near

And their nobles shall be of themselves, and their governor shall proceed from the midst of them; and I will cause him to draw near, and he shall approach unto me: for who is this that engaged his heart to approach unto me? saith the LORD. Jeremiah 30:21

A ruler will come from Israel's own people, and God Himself will bring him near so he can approach God, something only a priest could do. Christians read this as the Messiah, both King and High Priest, who did not take that honor on Himself but was called by the Father.

• fulfilled by Hebrews 5:4-5 — Christ glorified not himself to be made an high priest; the Father appointed Him.

Jehovah, God of the Covenant

And ye shall be my people, and I will be your God. Jeremiah 30:22

The covenant formula: Jehovah binds Himself to Israel as their God. Latter-day Saints understand the God who made and renews this covenant to be the premortal Christ.
