Jeremiah, the weeping prophet

Oh that my head were waters, and mine eyes a fountain of tears, that I might weep day and night for the slain of the daughter of my people! Jeremiah 9:1

Jeremiah weeps for Jerusalem before its destruction. Centuries later Jesus wept over the same city and foretold its fall, and some people even thought Jesus was Jeremiah (Matthew 16:14).

LORD of Hosts, the Refiner

LORD of Hosts — Jehovah, commander of heaven's armies

Therefore thus saith the LORD of hosts, Behold, I will melt them, and try them; for how shall I do for the daughter of my people? Jeremiah 9:7

Jehovah, the premortal Christ, promises to melt and try His people like metal in a furnace, not only to punish them but to purify them. Malachi uses the same refining image for the Lord who comes to His temple.

Thus saith the LORD, Let not the wise man glory in his wisdom, neither let the mighty man glory in his might, let not the rich man glory in his riches: Jeremiah 9:23–24

In contrast to the people who 'know not me' (verses 3 and 6), Jehovah says the only thing worth boasting in is knowing Him: His lovingkindness, judgment, and righteousness. Paul quotes this and applies it to glorying in Christ Jesus, and Jesus taught that eternal life is to know God and Jesus Christ.
