Job 33

Mediator (the messenger, the interpreter)

Interpreter (Hebrew melits) — one who stands between and speaks for another; a go-between or advocate

If there be a messenger with him, an interpreter, one among a thousand, to shew unto man his uprightness: Job 33:23

Elihu imagines a heavenly messenger who stands between a suffering sinner and God and speaks up for him. Latter-day Saints see Jesus Christ as that one Mediator and Advocate who pleads our cause with the Father. It answers Job's earlier cry for a 'daysman' to stand between him and God.

• alludes to Job 9:33 — Job had wished for a daysman to lay his hand upon both him and God; Elihu's interpreter answers that longing.
• fulfilled by 1 Timothy 2:5 — There is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus.
• fulfilled by D&C 45:3-5 — Christ as the Advocate with the Father pleading for those who believe on His name.

The Ransom that delivers from the pit

Then he is gracious unto him, and saith, Deliver him from going down to the pit: I have found a ransom. Job 33:24–28

God graciously announces that a ransom has been found, so the sinner is rescued from the pit, made new like a child, and sees God's face with joy. Latter-day Saints recognize the Atonement of Jesus Christ as that ransom, which frees the repentant from spiritual and physical death. The one who confesses 'I have sinned' is the one who is delivered.
