Jesus — Greek form of Joshua/Jeshua, "Jehovah saves"
After this there was a feast of the Jews; and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. John 5:1–9
Jesus finds a man who has waited 38 years by a pool for a cure that never came, and heals him with a word. The pool could not save him; the Lord Himself did.

He answered them, He that made me whole, the same said unto me, Take up thy bed, and walk. John 5:11
The healed man does not yet know His name, so he calls Jesus "He that made me whole", which is exactly who Christ is.

And he that was healed wist not who it was: for Jesus had conveyed himself away, a multitude being in that place. John 5:13–16
Jesus seeks the man out again to heal his soul as well as his body ("sin no more"). The healing on the Sabbath begins the plot to kill Him.

But Jesus answered them, My Father worketh hitherto, and I work. John 5:17–18
Jesus calls God "My Father" and says He works as the Father works. His enemies understood the claim clearly: He was declaring Himself the divine Son.

Then answered Jesus and said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, The Son can do nothing of himself, but what he seeth the Father do: for what things soever he doeth, these also doeth the Son likewise. John 5:19–20
The Son follows the pattern of His Father perfectly, and the Father loves Him and shows Him all things. Father and Son are two beings perfectly united in purpose.

For as the Father raiseth up the dead, and quickeneth them; even so the Son quickeneth whom he will. John 5:21
Jesus has the power to give life, both raising the dead and making spiritually dead souls alive.

For the Father judgeth no man, but hath committed all judgment unto the Son: John 5:22–23
The Father has given all judgment to the Son. To honor the Father, we must honor the One He sent.

Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life. John 5:24
Hearing Christ's word and believing brings everlasting life. The one who believes passes from spiritual death to life.

Jesus foretells that the dead will hear His voice. Latter-day revelation shows this fulfilled when He went to the spirit world after His death and organized the preaching of the gospel to the dead.

Son of Man — Son of the Man of Holiness, a name of the Father (Moses 6:57)
For as the Father hath life in himself; so hath he given to the Son to have life in himself; John 5:26–27
The Son has life in Himself, given by the Father, which is why He could lay down His life and take it again. As the Son of Man, the Son of the Man of Holiness, He is the appointed Judge.

Marvel not at this: for the hour is coming, in the which all that are in the graves shall hear his voice, John 5:28–29
Everyone who has ever died will hear Christ's voice and be resurrected. While Joseph Smith and Sidney Rigdon were pondering this verse, they received the vision of the degrees of glory.

I can of mine own self do nothing: as I hear, I judge: and my judgment is just; because I seek not mine own will, but the will of the Father which hath sent me. John 5:30
Jesus' judgment is just because He wants only what His Father wants. This is the same submission He shows in Gethsemane.

Jesus does not rest His claims on His own word alone. Another, His Father (v. 37), bears true witness of Him.

John the Baptist was a lamp that witnessed of Jesus. The people enjoyed John's light for a while but would not follow it to the One it pointed to.

The One the Father sent is Jesus. Rejecting Him shows the Father's word is not in them.

Jesus gives the key to all scripture: it testifies of Him. Studying the scriptures without coming to Christ misses their whole purpose.

Jesus comes with His Father's authority and name, as His true representative, yet many will not receive Him.

Jesus says outright that Moses wrote about Him. The law, the sacrifices, and the promise of a Prophet like Moses all pointed to Christ.
