Sacrifice in Similitude of the Only Begotten

And God revealed himself unto Seth, and he rebelled not, but offered an acceptable sacrifice, like unto his brother Abel. And to him also was born a son, and he called his name Enos. Moses 6:3

Seth continues the animal sacrifice commanded to Adam, which an angel declared was 'a similitude of the sacrifice of the Only Begotten of the Father' (Moses 5:7). An acceptable offering is one made in faith looking forward to Christ.

Jehovah (the Lord)

The Lord who revealed Himself to Seth and on whose name the early patriarchs called is Jehovah, the premortal Christ, who ministers to the prophets for the Father.

Priesthood after the Order of the Son of God

Now this same Priesthood, which was in the beginning, shall be in the end of the world also. Moses 6:7

The priesthood held from Adam onward is the Holy Priesthood after the Order of the Son of God; it bears His authority from the beginning to the end of the world.

Jehovah, the Lord God who made you

And when Enoch had heard these words, he bowed himself to the earth, before the Lord, and spake before the Lord, saying: Why is it that I have found favor in thy sight, and am but a lad, and all the people hate me; for I am slow of speech; wherefore am I thy servant? Moses 6:31–33

The Lord who calls Enoch and who made the people is Jehovah, the premortal Christ, through whom the Father created all things.

Abide in Me

The Lord's promise to Enoch uses the very words Jesus spoke in the allegory of the true vine: abiding in Him and He in us.

Healer of the Blind

And the Lord spake unto Enoch, and said unto him: Anoint thine eyes with clay, and wash them, and thou shalt see. And he did so. Moses 6:35–36

The Lord opens Enoch's spiritual eyes with clay and washing, the same pattern Jesus used to heal the man born blind. Christ is the one who gives sight, physical and spiritual.

Creator

And Enoch continued his speech, saying: The Lord which spake with me, the same is the God of heaven, and he is my God, and your God, and ye are my brethren, and why counsel ye yourselves, and deny the God of heaven? Moses 6:43–44

Enoch testifies that the Lord who spoke with him made the heavens and the earth. Latter-day scripture teaches the Father created through the Son, the premortal Jehovah.

Only Begotten Son

Only Begotten — the only Son born of the Father in the flesh

And he called upon our father Adam by his own voice, saying: I am God; I made the world, and men before they were in the flesh. Moses 6:51–52

The Father, speaking to Adam in His own voice, names His Only Begotten Son and describes Him as full of grace and truth. From the very first family, the gospel centered on Jesus Christ.

Jesus Christ

Jesus — Jehovah saves; Christ — the Anointed One

And he also said unto him: If thou wilt turn unto me, and hearken unto my voice, and believe, and repent of all thy transgressions, and be baptized, even in water, in the name of mine Only Begotten Son, who is full of grace and truth, which is Jesus Christ, the only name which shall be given under heaven, whereby salvation shall come unto the children of men, ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost, asking all things in his name, and whatsoever ye shall ask, it shall be given you. Moses 6:52

Adam was told the Savior's actual name, Jesus Christ, thousands of years before His birth, and that it is the only name through which anyone can be saved.

Doctrine of Christ

Moses 6:52

Faith, repentance, baptism in Christ's name, and the gift of the Holy Ghost, the doctrine of Christ, were taught to Adam, and prayer is to be offered in Christ's name.

Atonement for Original Guilt

And our father Adam spake unto the Lord, and said: Why is it that men must repent and be baptized in water? And the Lord said unto Adam: Behold I have forgiven thee thy transgression in the Garden of Eden. Moses 6:53–54

Adam's transgression was forgiven, and the Son of God atoned for it, so children are not held guilty for Adam's sin. Little children are whole through Christ.

Son of God

The early people of God knew the Redeemer by the title Son of God and understood that He would atone.

Son of Man

Son of Man — Son of Man of Holiness, that is, Son of the Father, whose name is Man of Holiness

Wherefore teach it unto your children, that all men, everywhere, must repent, or they can in nowise inherit the kingdom of God, for no unclean thing can dwell there, or dwell in his presence; for, in the language of Adam, Man of Holiness is his name, and the name of his Only Begotten is the Son of Man, even Jesus Christ, a righteous Judge, who shall come in the meridian of time. Moses 6:57

This verse unlocks Jesus's favorite title for Himself. 'Son of Man' is not a humble 'human son' only; it means Son of Man of Holiness, the Son of the exalted Father.

Righteous Judge

Jesus Christ is named the righteous Judge; the Father has committed all judgment to the Son, who knows us perfectly.

Coming in the Meridian of Time

Adam was told when the Savior would come: in the meridian, the high point or middle, of time. His mortal life is the center of all history.

Cleansed by the Blood of the Only Begotten

That by reason of transgression cometh the fall, which fall bringeth death, and inasmuch as ye were born into the world by water, and blood, and the spirit, which I have made, and so became of dust a living soul, even so ye must be born again into the kingdom of heaven, of water, and of the Spirit, and be cleansed by blood, even the blood of mine Only Begotten; that ye might be sanctified from all sin, and enjoy the words of eternal life in this world, and eternal life in the world to come, even immortal glory; Moses 6:59–60

Just as we are born physically by water, blood and spirit, we must be spiritually reborn by baptism (water), the Holy Ghost (Spirit), and the Atonement of Christ (blood). His blood sanctifies us from all sin.

Plan of Salvation through His Blood

The Father names the whole plan of salvation and says it works only through the blood, the Atonement, of His Only Begotten Son.

All Things Bear Record of Him

Moses 6:63

God declares that everything in creation, temporal and spiritual, is a likeness that testifies of Him. Latter-day Saints read this as the key to seeing types of Christ everywhere in scripture and nature.

Baptism, Likeness of Burial and Resurrection

And it came to pass, when the Lord had spoken with Adam, our father, that Adam cried unto the Lord, and he was caught away by the Spirit of the Lord, and was carried down into the water, and was laid under the water, and was brought forth out of the water. Moses 6:64–65

Adam's baptism is described as going down, being laid under, and coming forth, the pattern of Christ's death, burial and resurrection that every baptism symbolizes. Adam was the first to follow that pattern.

The Son

The Holy Ghost Adam receives is the record, the witness, of the Father and the Son. The Spirit's mission is to testify of Christ.

Him Without Beginning of Days

And thou art after the order of him who was without beginning of days or end of years, from all eternity to all eternity. Moses 6:67

Adam receives the priesthood 'after the order of him' who is eternal: the Holy Priesthood after the Order of the Son of God. The 'him' is Christ, the eternal High Priest.

Through baptism and the Spirit, Adam becomes one with God and a son of God, and all who follow the same path may too. Oneness and adoption as sons come through Christ.
