Jonah 4

Jehovah

LORD (Jehovah) — the eternal I AM, the covenant God of Israel

And he prayed unto the LORD, and said, I pray thee, O LORD, was not this my saying, when I was yet in my country? Therefore I fled before unto Tarshish: for I knew that thou art a gracious God, and merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness, and repentest thee of the evil. Jonah 4:2

Jonah complains using the very words the LORD used to describe Himself to Moses: gracious, merciful, slow to anger. Latter-day Saints recognize this character of Jehovah fully revealed in Jesus Christ.

• alludes to Exodus 34:6 — 'The LORD, The LORD God, merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abundant in goodness and truth.'
• the same title in Joel 2:13 — 'He is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness, and repenteth him of the evil.'

Then said the LORD, Thou hast had pity on the gourd, for the which thou hast not laboured, neither madest it grow; which came up in a night, and perished in a night: Jonah 4:10–11

The LORD asks Jonah to see that He cares for a whole Gentile city, even its cattle. Jehovah's concern for every nation foreshadows the Savior's command to take His gospel to all the world.

How we know: Jehovah is the premortal Christ (Abraham 1:16; D&C 110:3–4)
