Micah 6

Redeemer

Redeemer — one who buys back and sets free

O my people, what have I done unto thee? and wherein have I wearied thee? testify against me. Micah 6:3–5

Jehovah tenderly asks His people what He ever did to deserve their turning away, and reminds them He redeemed them from slavery in Egypt. The God who redeemed Israel from bondage is Jesus Christ, who redeems us from sin.

Sacrifice as similitude

Wherewith shall I come before the LORD, and bow myself before the high God? shall I come before him with burnt offerings, with calves of a year old? Micah 6:6–8

No amount of animals, oil, or even a man's own firstborn child can pay for sin; the LORD asks instead for a just, merciful and humble life. The unspoken answer to 'shall I give my firstborn for my transgression?' is that only God could give His Firstborn, Jesus Christ, whose infinite sacrifice we receive by walking humbly with Him.
