Micah 7

Christ's Ministry

For the son dishonoureth the father, the daughter riseth up against her mother, the daughter in law against her mother in law; a man’s enemies are the men of his own house. Micah 7:6

Micah describes a family torn apart by wickedness. Jesus borrowed these very words to warn His disciples that choosing Him might divide even their own households.

Jehovah

Jehovah (LORD) — the covenant name, 'I AM'; the premortal Christ

Therefore I will look unto the LORD; I will wait for the God of my salvation: my God will hear me. Micah 7:7

When no one else can be trusted, Micah looks to the LORD, 'the God of my salvation.' Latter-day Saints know the LORD of the Old Testament as Jesus Christ, the only source of salvation.

Jehovah

Rejoice not against me, O mine enemy: when I fall, I shall arise; when I sit in darkness, the LORD shall be a light unto me. Micah 7:8–9

The sinner who repents finds the LORD to be both his light and the one who 'pleads his cause.' These are the roles Jesus later claims as the Light of the World and our Advocate with the Father.

Good Shepherd

Feed thy people with thy rod, the flock of thine heritage, which dwell solitarily in the wood, in the midst of Carmel: let them feed in Bashan and Gilead, as in the days of old. Micah 7:14

Micah prays for the LORD to shepherd His flock with His staff. Earlier in the book Micah prophesied the Ruler from Bethlehem who would 'feed' His flock, and Jesus called Himself the Good Shepherd.

Jehovah

Who is a God like unto thee, that pardoneth iniquity, and passeth by the transgression of the remnant of his heritage? he retaineth not his anger for ever, because he delighteth in mercy. Micah 7:18–19

Micah's own name means 'Who is like Jehovah?', and he ends his book answering that question: no one, because Jehovah pardons sin and delights in mercy. That pardon is made possible by the Atonement of Jesus Christ, who buries repented sins as if in the depths of the sea.

Covenant Mercy to Abraham

Thou wilt perform the truth to Jacob, and the mercy to Abraham, which thou hast sworn unto our fathers from the days of old. Micah 7:20

Micah trusts God to keep the oath He swore to Abraham. When the birth of Jesus was near, Zacharias praised God in almost these words, showing that the promised mercy to Abraham was fulfilled in Christ.
