Nehemiah 1

Jehovah, Keeper of the Covenant

And said, I beseech thee, O LORD God of heaven, the great and terrible God, that keepeth covenant and mercy for them that love him and observe his commandments: Nehemiah 1:5–6

Nehemiah prays to Jehovah, the premortal Jesus Christ, as the God who keeps covenants and shows mercy. He trusts Him to hear a people who have broken their side of the covenant.

How we know: Jehovah is the premortal Christ (Abraham 1:16; D&C 110:3–4)

• alludes to Deuteronomy 7:9 — The faithful God, which keepeth covenant and mercy with them that love him.
• alludes to Daniel 9:4 — Daniel's prayer uses nearly the same address: keeping the covenant and mercy to them that love him.

Jehovah, the Gatherer of Israel

Remember, I beseech thee, the word that thou commandedst thy servant Moses, saying, If ye transgress, I will scatter you abroad among the nations: Nehemiah 1:8–9

Nehemiah quotes Jehovah's own words to Moses: Israel would be scattered for sin but gathered again if they turned to Him. The premortal Christ speaks here as the One who scatters and gathers His covenant people.

• alludes to Leviticus 26:33 — I will scatter you among the heathen.

Redeemer

Now these are thy servants and thy people, whom thou hast redeemed by thy great power, and by thy strong hand. Nehemiah 1:10–11

Nehemiah reminds Jehovah that Israel is the people He redeemed out of Egypt. The God who redeemed Israel with a strong hand is Jesus Christ, the Redeemer of all.
