Joshua (Jehoshua) -- type of Jesus

Jehoshua / Joshua -- 'Jehovah is salvation'; the same Hebrew name rendered in Greek as Jesus

These are the names of the men which Moses sent to spy out the land. And Moses called Oshea the son of Nun Jehoshua. Numbers 13:16

Moses changes Oshea ('salvation') to Jehoshua ('Jehovah saves'), the very name Jesus bears. Joshua, not Moses, brings Israel into the promised land, just as Jesus, not the law, brings us into God's rest. The New Testament even writes Joshua's name as 'Jesus'.

How we know: a traditional type, cited

• the same title in Hebrews 4:8 — KJV renders Joshua's name 'Jesus' and contrasts his rest with the rest Christ gives.
• the same title in Acts 7:45 — Stephen calls Joshua 'Jesus' when recounting the entry into Canaan.
• a type of what is in Matthew 1:21 — 'Thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins' -- the meaning of the name fulfilled.

Early Christian teachers saw the single great cluster hung on a pole between two men as an image of Christ, the fruit of the promised land, lifted on the cross. It is a traditional echo, not a declared type.
