Psalms 3

Jehovah (the LORD), shield and Savior

Jehovah — the covenant name, 'I AM,' the eternal One

But thou, O LORD, art a shield for me; my glory, and the lifter up of mine head. Psalms 3:3–8

When everyone says there is no help for him in God, David calls the LORD his shield and says salvation belongs to Him. Latter-day Saints know Jehovah is Jesus Christ, the only source of salvation.

How we know: Jehovah is the premortal Christ (Abraham 1:16; D&C 110:3–4)

  • the same title in Jonah 2:9 — Jonah likewise confesses, Salvation is of the LORD.
  • interpreted by Mosiah 3:17 — No other name whereby salvation can come, but in and through the name of Christ.

Lying down and awaking

I laid me down and slept; I awaked; for the LORD sustained me. Psalms 3:5

David means that he slept safely through a night of danger. Many Christians have heard in this line a soft picture of Christ lying down in death and rising again, because the Father sustained Him.
