Psalms 81

Jehovah

I removed his shoulder from the burden: his hands were delivered from the pots. Psalms 81:6–7

Jehovah speaks of lifting Israel's burden and testing them at Meribah, where water came from the rock. The deliverer who speaks is the premortal Christ.

Jehovah

Hear, O my people, and I will testify unto thee: O Israel, if thou wilt hearken unto me; Psalms 81:8–13

The LORD speaks in His own voice, repeating the opening of the Ten Commandments. The Jehovah who gave the law is Jesus Christ, who longs for His people to hearken to Him.

How we know: the verse itself names Him

  • quotes Exodus 20:2 — I am the LORD thy God, which have brought thee out of the land of Egypt.
  • the same title in 3 Nephi 15:5 — Jesus: I am he that gave the law.

Rock

He should have fed them also with the finest of the wheat: and with honey out of the rock should I have satisfied thee. Psalms 81:16

God would have fed Israel with the best wheat and honey from the rock. Christ is the Rock and the bread of life who truly satisfies.
