Ruler from Judah

Now the sons of Reuben the firstborn of Israel, (for he was the firstborn; but, forasmuch as he defiled his father’s bed, his birthright was given unto the sons of Joseph the son of Israel: and the genealogy is not to be reckoned after the birthright. 1 Chronicles 5:1–2

The chronicler explains that the ruling line came from Judah even though Joseph had the birthright. That chief ruler was David, and through David's line came Jesus, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, as Jacob foretold of Shiloh.

How we know: a Church study aid lists it

• alludes to Genesis 49:10 — The sceptre shall not depart from Judah until Shiloh come.
• alludes to Hebrews 7:14 — It is evident that our Lord sprang out of Juda.

God of Israel (Jehovah)

God of Israel — the covenant God who led Israel, Jehovah

And they transgressed against the God of their fathers, and went a whoring after the gods of the people of the land, whom God destroyed before them. 1 Chronicles 5:25–26

The God of their fathers and the God of Israel is Jehovah, the premortal Christ. Earlier in the chapter He delivered these tribes when they trusted Him (verse 20); here He lets them be carried captive when they abandon their covenant with Him.

How we know: Jehovah is the premortal Christ (Abraham 1:16; D&C 110:3–4)
