Sacrifice as a similitude

And it came to pass that they did rejoice exceedingly, and did offer sacrifice and burnt offerings unto the Lord; and they gave thanks unto the God of Israel. 1 Nephi 5:9

In thanks for the safe return, the family offers sacrifice and burnt offerings. These rites of the law of Moses were types of the sacrifice of the Son of God.

Jehovah, the God of Israel

And it came to pass that they did rejoice exceedingly, and did offer sacrifice and burnt offerings unto the Lord; and they gave thanks unto the God of Israel. 1 Nephi 5:9–10

The family thanks the God of Israel, who is Jehovah. When the resurrected Jesus appears in the Book of Mormon, He declares, "I am the God of Israel."

Joseph as a type of Christ

And it came to pass that my father, Lehi, also found upon the plates of brass a genealogy of his fathers; wherefore he knew that he was a descendant of Joseph; yea, even that Joseph who was the son of Jacob, who was sold into Egypt, and who was preserved by the hand of the Lord, that he might preserve his father, Jacob, and all his household from perishing with famine. 1 Nephi 5:14

Joseph was sold by his brothers, then raised up to save the very family that rejected him, which is a classic type of Jesus Christ. The verse stresses that pattern: he was preserved in order to preserve others from perishing.

Jehovah

And they were also led out of captivity and out of the land of Egypt, by that same God who had preserved them. 1 Nephi 5:15

The God who preserved Joseph and led Israel out of Egypt is Jehovah. In modern revelation the Lord identifies Himself as the one who led Israel out of Egypt.
