Jesus Christ

Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God, and Timothy our brother, unto the church of God which is at Corinth, with all the saints which are in all Achaia: 2 Corinthians 1:1

An apostle is a special witness sent by Jesus Christ. Paul opens by stating whose messenger he is.

How we know: the verse itself names Him

The Lord Jesus Christ, Son of the Father

Grace be to you and peace from God our Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ. 2 Corinthians 1:2–3

Grace and peace come from two sources, God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ, and God is called the Father of Jesus Christ. This shows the Father and the Son as distinct, united beings.

How we know: the verse itself names Him

• the same title in Ephesians 1:3 — "Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ".

Sufferings and consolation of Christ

For as the sufferings of Christ abound in us, so our consolation also aboundeth by Christ. 2 Corinthians 1:5

When disciples suffer for Christ they share a little in His sufferings, and the comfort they receive also comes through Him. Because He suffered, He knows how to comfort us.

How we know: the verse itself names Him

The day of the Lord Jesus

As also ye have acknowledged us in part, that we are your rejoicing, even as ye also are ours in the day of the Lord Jesus. 2 Corinthians 1:14

"The day of the Lord Jesus" is the day He comes again. Paul hopes to rejoice with the Corinthian Saints on that day.

Amen — Hebrew, 'truly, so be it'; Christ as the faithful confirmation of God's word

For the Son of God, Jesus Christ, who was preached among you by us, even by me and Silvanus and Timotheus, was not yea and nay, but in him was yea. 2 Corinthians 1:19–20

Jesus Christ, the Son of God, is completely reliable: every promise God has made is fulfilled and made sure in Him. He is God's "yes" and "Amen" to His children.

Christ, the Anointed

Christ — Greek Christos, 'the Anointed One'

Now he which stablisheth us with you in Christ, and hath anointed us, is God; 2 Corinthians 1:21

God makes believers strong "in Christ" and "anoints" them. In Greek the words Christ and anointed come from the same root, so being in the Anointed One means sharing His anointing.
