Jehovah

LORD (Jehovah) — the eternal I AM, the covenant God of Israel

I saw the LORD standing upon the altar: and he said, Smite the lintel of the door, that the posts may shake: and cut them in the head, all of them; and I will slay the last of them with the sword: he that fleeth of them shall not flee away, and he that escapeth of them shall not be delivered. Amos 9:1

Amos sees Jehovah, the premortal Christ, standing on the altar of the corrupted sanctuary to pronounce judgment.

Creation by Christ

The Lord GOD of hosts — Jehovah, Lord of the armies of heaven

And the Lord GOD of hosts is he that toucheth the land, and it shall melt, and all that dwell therein shall mourn: and it shall rise up wholly like a flood; and shall be drowned, as by the flood of Egypt. Amos 9:5–6

The Lord GOD of hosts is praised as the One who built the heavens and commands the seas. That Creator is Jehovah, the premortal Jesus Christ.

How we know: Jehovah is the premortal Christ (Abraham 1:16; D&C 110:3–4)

Jehovah

Behold, the eyes of the Lord GOD are upon the sinful kingdom, and I will destroy it from off the face of the earth; saving that I will not utterly destroy the house of Jacob, saith the LORD. Amos 9:8–9

Jehovah, who brought Israel out of Egypt, will scatter them among the nations but will not lose a single grain. The scattering and later gathering of Israel is the work of Jesus Christ, the God of Israel.

Messiah, Son of David

Messiah — the Anointed One

In that day will I raise up the tabernacle of David that is fallen, and close up the breaches thereof; and I will raise up his ruins, and I will build it as in the days of old: Amos 9:11

The LORD promises to rebuild David's fallen house. The New Testament shows this is fulfilled in Jesus Christ, the Son of David, whose kingdom gathers people from every nation.

Taking His name

That they may possess the remnant of Edom, and of all the heathen, which are called by my name, saith the LORD that doeth this. Amos 9:12

Even Gentile nations will be 'called by my name.' James used this at the Jerusalem council to show that Gentiles could come into Christ's Church, taking His name upon them by covenant.

Millennial reign

LORD thy God — Jehovah, Israel's covenant God

Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that the plowman shall overtake the reaper, and the treader of grapes him that soweth seed; and the mountains shall drop sweet wine, and all the hills shall melt. Amos 9:13–15

Jehovah promises to gather Israel home, plant them permanently, and make the land overflow with harvest. Latter-day Saints see the gathering of Israel in the last days and the peace of Christ's millennial reign in this promise.
