Obadiah 1

Jehovah

LORD (Jehovah) — the eternal I AM, the covenant God of Israel

Though thou exalt thyself as the eagle, and though thou set thy nest among the stars, thence will I bring thee down, saith the LORD. Obadiah 1:4

Jehovah declares that no height of pride can place Edom beyond His reach. The God who humbles the proud is the premortal Christ.

How we know: Jehovah is the premortal Christ (Abraham 1:16; D&C 110:3–4)

Second Coming

For the day of the LORD is near upon all the heathen: as thou hast done, it shall be done unto thee: thy reward shall return upon thine own head. Obadiah 1:15–17

Obadiah foresees the day of the LORD coming on all nations, with deliverance and holiness on mount Zion. Latter-day Saints read the day of the LORD as the time of Christ's coming, when the righteous find safety in Zion.

Millennial reign

And saviours shall come up on mount Zion to judge the mount of Esau; and the kingdom shall be the LORD’s. Obadiah 1:21

The book ends with the promise that the kingdom will belong to the LORD. This looks forward to Jesus Christ reigning as King when all kingdoms become His.

Saviors on Mount Zion

Savior — one who rescues and delivers

And saviours shall come up on mount Zion to judge the mount of Esau; and the kingdom shall be the LORD’s. Obadiah 1:21

Obadiah sees 'saviours' rising on mount Zion. Joseph Smith taught that Saints become saviors on mount Zion by performing temple ordinances for their dead, acting in a small way in the likeness of the one true Savior, Jesus Christ.
