Jehovah

Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God is one LORD: Deuteronomy 6:4–5

Jesus called this the first and great commandment. Loving Jehovah with all our heart, soul, and might is loving the God who became our Savior; Latter-day Saints also read "one LORD" as the perfect oneness of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost.

Jehovah

Then beware lest thou forget the LORD, which brought thee forth out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage. Deuteronomy 6:12

In times of plenty Israel must not forget Jehovah, who freed them from slavery. We are warned the same way: not to forget Christ, who freed us, once life becomes comfortable.

Jehovah

Thou shalt fear the LORD thy God, and serve him, and shalt swear by his name. Deuteronomy 6:13

Jesus answered Satan's demand for worship with this verse. The Savior used Deuteronomy — the law He Himself had given as Jehovah — to stand His ground, and Isaiah promises that one day every tongue will swear by that name.

Jehovah

Ye shall not tempt the LORD your God, as ye tempted him in Massah. Deuteronomy 6:16

Jesus quoted this line when Satan dared Him to throw Himself from the temple, and Paul turns the same command around on the Saints — "neither let us tempt Christ, as some of them also tempted" — so the LORD whom Israel tested in the wilderness is Jesus Christ.

  • alludes to Exodus 17:7 — Massah, so named "because they tempted the LORD, saying, Is the LORD among us, or not?"

Jehovah

Then thou shalt say unto thy son, We were Pharaoh’s bondmen in Egypt; and the LORD brought us out of Egypt with a mighty hand: Deuteronomy 6:21–23

Fathers are to teach their children that Jehovah brought them out in order to bring them in. Christ's redemption works the same way: He frees us from bondage so He can bring us home to our promised inheritance.
