Matthew 22

Bridegroom

And Jesus answered and spake unto them again by parables, and said, Matthew 22:1–14

The king is the Father and the son whose wedding is celebrated is Christ, the Bridegroom. The invited guests refuse, others are gathered from the highways, and those who come must be clothed in the wedding garment of righteousness He provides.

Then went the Pharisees, and took counsel how they might entangle him in his talk. Matthew 22:15–22

His enemies flatter Jesus but accidentally speak truth: He is true and teaches God's way. He escapes their trap and teaches that, as the coin bears Caesar's image, we bear God's image and owe ourselves to God.

Jehovah

Jesus answered and said unto them, Ye do err, not knowing the scriptures, nor the power of God. Matthew 22:29–32

Jesus proves the resurrection from the words God spoke to Moses at the burning bush. Latter-day Saints understand the God who spoke there as Jehovah, the premortal Christ, so Jesus is quoting His own words to show that Abraham, Isaac and Jacob still live.

Jehovah

Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. Matthew 22:37–38

Jesus names the first commandment from Deuteronomy, where "the LORD thy God" is Jehovah. In latter-day revelation the Lord pairs this commandment with serving in the name of Jesus Christ.

Christ

While the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them, Matthew 22:41–42

Jesus turns the questioning around and asks the most important question in scripture: what do you think of Christ? The Pharisees know the Messiah comes from David but miss that He is standing before them.

Christ

He saith unto them, How then doth David in spirit call him Lord, saying, Matthew 22:43–45

Jesus explains Psalm 110 as a conversation between the Father (the LORD) and the Messiah (David's Lord). If the Messiah is David's Lord, He must be more than David's descendant: He is the Son of God, who will sit at the Father's right hand.
