Ether 13

Jehovah

For behold, they rejected all the words of Ether; for he truly told them of all things, from the beginning of man; and that after the waters had receded from off the face of this land it became a choice land above all other lands, a chosen land of the Lord; wherefore the Lord would have that all men should serve him who dwell upon the face thereof; Ether 13:2–3

The Lord who owns this choice land and commands its people to serve Him is identified in Ether 2:12 as Jesus Christ, the God of the land. The New Jerusalem will be His holy sanctuary.

How we know: Jehovah is the premortal Christ (Abraham 1:16; D&C 110:3–4)

Christ

Christ — the Anointed One

Behold, Ether saw the days of Christ, and he spake concerning a New Jerusalem upon this land. Ether 13:4

Ether, a Jaredite prophet living long before Jesus' birth, saw the days of Christ in vision. He tied Christ's work to a New Jerusalem built in the Americas.

How we know: the verse itself names Him

• the same event in 3 Nephi 20:22 — the risen Christ promises to establish his people in this land as a New Jerusalem
• alludes to Ether 3:25 — the Lord showed the brother of Jared all the inhabitants of the earth to the ends of the earth

Joseph as a type

And that a New Jerusalem should be built up upon this land, unto the remnant of the seed of Joseph, for which things there has been a type. Ether 13:6–7

Moroni calls Joseph's rescue of his family in Egypt a type. As Joseph preserved Israel in a new land, the Lord preserved Joseph's seed by leading them to a promised land, which fits the wider pattern of Joseph as a type of Christ the Deliverer.

Lamb of God

Lamb — the sacrificial offering whose blood redeems

And then cometh the New Jerusalem; and blessed are they who dwell therein, for it is they whose garments are white through the blood of the Lamb; and they are they who are numbered among the remnant of the seed of Joseph, who were of the house of Israel. Ether 13:10

The people of the New Jerusalem are clean because their garments were made white by the blood of the Lamb, Jesus Christ's atoning sacrifice.

How we know: the verse itself names Him

• alludes to Revelation 7:14 — they have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb
• the same title in Alma 13:11 — garments washed white through the blood of the Lamb

Lamb of God

Lamb — the sacrificial offering whose blood redeems

And then also cometh the Jerusalem of old; and the inhabitants thereof, blessed are they, for they have been washed in the blood of the Lamb; and they are they who were scattered and gathered in from the four quarters of the earth, and from the north countries, and are partakers of the fulfilling of the covenant which God made with their father, Abraham. Ether 13:11

Gathered Israel in the rebuilt old Jerusalem is also washed in the blood of the Lamb. The covenant with Abraham is fulfilled through Christ's Atonement.

How we know: the verse itself names Him · a Church study aid lists it

• alludes to Revelation 1:5 — him that loved us, and washed us from our sins in his own blood
• alludes to Revelation 7:14 — made them white in the blood of the Lamb

Jesus Christ

And when these things come, bringeth to pass the scripture which saith, there are they who were first, who shall be last; and there are they who were last, who shall be first. Ether 13:12

The scripture Moroni cites is a saying of Jesus. The order of the gathering, Gentiles and Israel, follows the Savior's words about the first and the last.

• alludes to 1 Nephi 13:42 — the last shall be first, and the first shall be last, applied to Jews and Gentiles

Jehovah

And in the second year the word of the Lord came to Ether, that he should go and prophesy unto Coriantumr that, if he would repent, and all his household, the Lord would give unto him his kingdom and spare the people— Ether 13:20–21

The Lord, whom Moroni has named as Jesus Christ in this record, sends Ether with a last offer of mercy to Coriantumr and a prophecy of what will follow if he refuses.

How we know: Jehovah is the premortal Christ (Abraham 1:16; D&C 110:3–4)
