Jesus

Jesus — Greek form of Joshua/Jeshua, "Jehovah saves"

And it came to pass, that when Jesus had finished these sayings, he departed from Galilee, and came into the coasts of Judaea beyond Jordan; Matthew 19:1–2

Jesus moves toward Jerusalem, where He will die, and still stops to heal the crowds. His last journey is filled with ministering.

Jesus

And he answered and said unto them, Have ye not read, that he which made them at the beginning made them male and female, Matthew 19:4–9

Jesus answers the Pharisees by going back to the Creation and then speaks with His own authority: "I say unto you." Latter-day Saints understand that Jesus, as Jehovah under the Father, was the Creator, so He is explaining the very plan for marriage He helped establish.

Jesus

Then were there brought unto him little children, that he should put his hands on them, and pray: and the disciples rebuked them. Matthew 19:13–15

When the disciples try to send children away, Jesus invites them to come to Him and blesses them with His hands. He shows that no one is too small to come unto Christ.

Master

Master — Teacher (Greek didaskalos)

And, behold, one came and said unto him, Good Master, what good thing shall I do, that I may have eternal life? Matthew 19:16–17

The young man calls Jesus "Good Master" and asks Him the way to eternal life. Jesus turns the man's attention to God the Father as the source of all goodness, making the man ask whether he truly understands who he is talking to.

Jesus

Jesus said unto him, If thou wilt be perfect, go and sell that thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come and follow me. Matthew 19:21

Jesus names the one thing the young man lacks and invites him to follow Him personally. Eternal life is found not only in keeping rules but in giving everything to come after Christ.

Grace

Then said Jesus unto his disciples, Verily I say unto you, That a rich man shall hardly enter into the kingdom of heaven. Matthew 19:23–26

When the disciples wonder if anyone can be saved, Jesus teaches that salvation is impossible by human effort alone but possible through God's power. That power reaches us through Him and His Atonement.

Son of Man

Son of Man — Son of the Man of Holiness, God the Father (Moses 6:57)

And Jesus said unto them, Verily I say unto you, That ye which have followed me, in the regeneration when the Son of man shall sit in the throne of his glory, ye also shall sit upon twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel. Matthew 19:28

Jesus prophesies that He will reign in glory when the earth is renewed, and that His Twelve will judge Israel under Him. It is a promise of His Second Coming and millennial reign.

Take His Name

And every one that hath forsaken houses, or brethren, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or lands, for my name’s sake, shall receive an hundredfold, and shall inherit everlasting life. Matthew 19:29

Jesus promises that any sacrifice made for His name will be repaid a hundred times over with everlasting life. Following Christ is never a losing trade.
