Exodus 35

Jehovah

And Moses gathered all the congregation of the children of Israel together, and said unto them, These are the words which the LORD hath commanded, that ye should do them. Exodus 35:1

Moses delivers the commands of the LORD, Jehovah, who is the premortal Jesus Christ and the giver of the law.

The Tabernacle

The tabernacle, his tent, and his covering, his taches, and his boards, his bars, his pillars, and his sockets, Exodus 35:11

The tabernacle was built after a heavenly pattern. Hebrews teaches it was an 'example and shadow of heavenly things,' pointing to the true tabernacle where Jesus Christ ministers as High Priest.

Mercy Seat

The ark, and the staves thereof, with the mercy seat, and the vail of the covering, Exodus 35:12

The mercy seat was the lid of the ark where atoning blood was sprinkled and where God met His people. It points to Jesus Christ, through whose blood we receive mercy.

  • a type of what is in Hebrews 9:11-12 — Christ, 'an high priest of good things to come', entered the holy place 'by his own blood' (the antitype of the Day of Atonement blood sprinkled on the mercy seat). Hebrews does not name the mercy seat in these verses, so this is type-antitype, not interpretation.
  • alluded to by Romans 3:25 — Christ set forth 'to be a propitiation' (the Greek word used for the mercy seat).

The Vail

The ark, and the staves thereof, with the mercy seat, and the vail of the covering, Exodus 35:12

The vail separated the people from God's presence. Hebrews says the vail represents Christ's flesh, through which we enter God's presence.

Bread of Life

The table, and his staves, and all his vessels, and the shewbread, Exodus 35:13

The shewbread was bread kept always before the Lord's presence. It is widely taught as a picture of Jesus Christ, the Bread of Life.

Light of the World

The candlestick also for the light, and his furniture, and his lamps, with the oil for the light, Exodus 35:14

The golden candlestick was the only light in the holy place. It is traditionally seen as a picture of Christ, the Light of the World.

Sacrifice as a similitude of Christ

The altar of burnt offering, with his brasen grate, his staves, and all his vessels, the laver and his foot, Exodus 35:16

The altar of burnt offering is where animal sacrifices were offered, each one a similitude of the sacrifice of the Only Begotten.

High Priest

The cloths of service, to do service in the holy place, the holy garments for Aaron the priest, and the garments of his sons, to minister in the priest’s office. Exodus 35:19

Aaron in his holy garments served as Israel's high priest, standing between the people and God. Hebrews teaches that Jesus Christ is the great High Priest this office pointed to.
