Jesus went unto the mount of Olives. John 8:1–2
Jesus spends the night on the Mount of Olives and returns at dawn to teach everyone who comes to Him in the temple.

Accusers try to trap Jesus between the law and mercy. The only sinless person present, the only one who could rightly condemn her, chooses not to, and calls her to a new life. (The Joseph Smith Translation adds that she glorified God from that hour and believed on His name.)

This they said, tempting him, that they might have to accuse him. But Jesus stooped down, and with his finger wrote on the ground, as though he heard them not. John 8:6–8
Many have noticed that the One who once wrote the law "with the finger of God" on stone now writes with His finger on the ground as the law is used against a sinner. The text does not say what He wrote, so this is a soft echo only.

Light of the World — the source of truth and life that dispels darkness
Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life. John 8:12
At the Feast of Tabernacles, when great lamps lit the temple courts, Jesus declares that He is the true light. Following Him means never walking in darkness.

The Pharisees therefore said unto him, Thou bearest record of thyself; thy record is not true. John 8:13–14
Jesus knows where He came from, the presence of the Father, and where He is returning. His witness about Himself is true because He alone knows this.

The law required two witnesses. Jesus has two: Himself and His Father, two separate beings who both testify that He is the Son.

To know Jesus is to know the Father, because the Son shows us exactly what the Father is like. Still no one can take Him before His hour.

Jesus is going back to the Father, where those who reject Him cannot follow. He is "from above"; His origin is heaven.

I AM — the self-existent One; the meaning of the name Jehovah
I said therefore unto you, that ye shall die in your sins: for if ye believe not that I am he, ye shall die in your sins. John 8:24
In Greek Jesus says simply "unless you believe that I am" (ego eimi); the English adds "he". It echoes how Jehovah speaks of Himself in Isaiah, and salvation depends on believing it.

When asked "Who art thou?", Jesus says He is exactly who He has claimed to be all along, the One sent by the Father.

Son of Man — Son of the Man of Holiness (Moses 6:57)
Then said Jesus unto them, When ye have lifted up the Son of man, then shall ye know that I am he, and that I do nothing of myself; but as my Father hath taught me, I speak these things. John 8:28–29
"Lifted up" means lifted up on the cross. The very act meant to destroy Him will reveal who He is. Jesus always does what pleases His Father.

As he spake these words, many believed on him. John 8:30–32
True disciples keep living Christ's word, and that truth sets them free.

Sin makes people slaves. A slave has no permanent place in the household, but the Son does, and He has power to set slaves free for real.

Jesus speaks what He has seen with His Father. Those claiming to be Abraham's children are trying to kill Him, which Abraham would never have done.

Jesus came forth from God. Anyone who truly loved God would love the Son He sent.

Jesus challenges His enemies to name a single sin in Him, and none can. He alone lived without sin.

Accused of having a devil, Jesus answers that He honors His Father and does not seek His own glory.

Jesus promises that those who keep His word will never see death, meaning eternal death. His critics ask if He thinks He is greater than Abraham; the answer, as the next verses show, is yes.

The God they claim to worship is Jesus' own Father, who honors His Son. Jesus knows Him and keeps His word.

Abraham was shown the coming of Christ and rejoiced. Restoration scripture confirms that Abraham saw the Messiah's day.

I AM — the self-existent, eternal One; the name Jehovah given to Moses
Then said the Jews unto him, Thou art not yet fifty years old, and hast thou seen Abraham? John 8:57–58
Jesus does not say "I was" but "I am", the name God gave Moses at the burning bush. He is declaring that He is Jehovah, the God of Abraham, who existed before Abraham was born.

Then took they up stones to cast at him: but Jesus hid himself, and went out of the temple, going through the midst of them, and so passed by. John 8:59
They grab stones, the punishment for blasphemy, which shows they understood He had claimed to be God. Jesus passes through the crowd unharmed because His hour had not yet come.
