Isaiah 24

Jehovah

Jehovah — the covenant name, rendered LORD; the premortal Jesus Christ

Behold, the LORD maketh the earth empty, and maketh it waste, and turneth it upside down, and scattereth abroad the inhabitants thereof. Isaiah 24:1–3

Jehovah, the premortal Christ, pronounces a worldwide judgment preceding His reign.

The Everlasting Covenant (apostasy)

The earth also is defiled under the inhabitants thereof; because they have transgressed the laws, changed the ordinance, broken the everlasting covenant. Isaiah 24:5

The earth is defiled because people changed the ordinances and broke the everlasting covenant. The Lord Jesus Christ uses this same language in the preface to the Doctrine and Covenants to describe the apostasy that required the Restoration.

Jehovah

They shall lift up their voice, they shall sing for the majesty of the LORD, they shall cry aloud from the sea. Isaiah 24:14–16

A remnant scattered to the isles of the sea sings the praise of the LORD God of Israel. The Hebrew of 'glory to the righteous' can read 'glory to the Righteous One', a title of the Messiah.

Second Coming

The earth is utterly broken down, the earth is clean dissolved, the earth is moved exceedingly. Isaiah 24:19–20

The shaking and reeling of the earth is a sign of the last days before the Lord comes. The Savior repeats this image in latter-day revelation about the signs of His coming.

Christ's Visit to the Spirit Prison

And it shall come to pass in that day, that the LORD shall punish the host of the high ones that are on high, and the kings of the earth upon the earth. Isaiah 24:21–22

Those shut up in prison will be visited after many days. Latter-day Saints see here the Savior's visit to the spirit world after His death, when the gospel was opened to those in spirit prison.

• fulfilled by 1 Peter 3:18-19 — Christ went and preached unto the spirits in prison
• fulfilled by D&C 138:18 — the Son of God appeared, declaring liberty to the captives
• fulfilled by D&C 138:30 — He organized messengers to carry the gospel to the spirits in darkness

Millennial Reign

Then the moon shall be confounded, and the sun ashamed, when the LORD of hosts shall reign in mount Zion, and in Jerusalem, and before his ancients gloriously. Isaiah 24:23

When the LORD of hosts reigns in Zion and Jerusalem, His glory outshines the sun and moon. This is Jesus Christ's millennial reign.
