Isaiah 31

Holy One of Israel

Holy One of Israel — the holy God who made covenants with Israel

Woe to them that go down to Egypt for help; and stay on horses, and trust in chariots, because they are many; and in horsemen, because they are very strong; but they look not unto the Holy One of Israel, neither seek the LORD! Isaiah 31:1

Judah looks to horses and chariots instead of the Holy One of Israel, the premortal Christ. This is the one Deliverer they should seek.

How we know: the verse itself names Him

Lord of Hosts

Lord of Hosts — Jehovah Sabaoth, Lord of the armies of heaven

For thus hath the LORD spoken unto me, Like as the lion and the young lion roaring on his prey, when a multitude of shepherds is called forth against him, he will not be afraid of their voice, nor abase himself for the noise of them: so shall the LORD of hosts come down to fight for mount Zion, and for the hill thereof. Isaiah 31:4–5

Jehovah comes down to fight for Zion and protects Jerusalem like a bird hovering over its nest. 'Passing over he will preserve it' recalls the Passover, when the LORD passed over the houses marked with the lamb's blood.

How we know: the verse itself names Him

• alludes to Exodus 12:23 — 'the LORD will pass over the door' of those marked by the Passover blood.
