The Lord Jesus Christ

James, a servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ, to the twelve tribes which are scattered abroad, greeting. James 1:1

James, the Lord's own brother, introduces himself simply as a servant of the Lord Jesus Christ.

Ask of God — the verse behind the First Vision

If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him. James 1:5

This promise sent young Joseph Smith into the grove to pray, where the Father and the Son appeared to him. The verse itself names God, not Christ, so it is a soft but real link.

The crown of life promised by the Lord

Blessed is the man that endureth temptation: for when he is tried, he shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord hath promised to them that love him. James 1:12

The Lord promises a crown of eternal life to those who endure trials and love Him; in Revelation the risen Christ makes this same promise.
