Hope of Israel, the Saviour

Saviour — the One who rescues and delivers; Hope of Israel — the One Israel's whole expectation rests upon

O the hope of Israel, the saviour thereof in time of trouble, why shouldest thou be as a stranger in the land, and as a wayfaring man that turneth aside to tarry for a night? Jeremiah 14:8

The people call the LORD their Hope and their Saviour. Jehovah declared that beside Him there is no Saviour, and Paul said he was in chains 'for the hope of Israel,' meaning Jesus the Messiah and His Resurrection.

The Saviour as a passing stranger

O the hope of Israel, the saviour thereof in time of trouble, why shouldest thou be as a stranger in the land, and as a wayfaring man that turneth aside to tarry for a night? Jeremiah 14:8

Judah complains that their Saviour feels like a traveler who only stops for a night. Later the resurrected Christ really did walk as an unrecognized stranger with two disciples, who begged Him to stay with them for the night.

Called by His name

Why shouldest thou be as a man astonied, as a mighty man that cannot save? yet thou, O LORD, art in the midst of us, and we are called by thy name; leave us not. Jeremiah 14:9

Even in sin, the people plead that the LORD lives among them and that they bear His name. The covenant name of Jehovah is the name Saints take upon themselves as the name of Jesus Christ.

How we know: Jehovah is the premortal Christ (Abraham 1:16; D&C 110:3–4)

The LORD who made all things

Are there any among the vanities of the Gentiles that can cause rain? or can the heavens give showers? art not thou he, O LORD our God? therefore we will wait upon thee: for thou hast made all these things. Jeremiah 14:22

No idol can send rain; only the LORD who made all things can. Scripture teaches that the Creator of all things is Jesus Christ.

How we know: Jehovah is the premortal Christ (Abraham 1:16; D&C 110:3–4)
