Jeremiah 15

Moses and Samuel the intercessors

Then said the LORD unto me, Though Moses and Samuel stood before me, yet my mind could not be toward this people: cast them out of my sight, and let them go forth. Jeremiah 15:1

Moses and Samuel are remembered as men who stood before God and pleaded for Israel. Their intercession foreshadows Jesus Christ, the great Mediator who ever lives to make intercession for His people.

Suffering reproach for the LORD's sake

O LORD, thou knowest: remember me, and visit me, and revenge me of my persecutors; take me not away in thy longsuffering: know that for thy sake I have suffered rebuke. Jeremiah 15:15

Jeremiah suffers insults because he is faithful to the LORD. Psalm 69, which the New Testament applies to Christ, uses the same words, and Paul says the reproaches aimed at God fell on Christ.

Called by the name of the LORD God of hosts

Thy words were found, and I did eat them; and thy word was unto me the joy and rejoicing of mine heart: for I am called by thy name, O LORD God of hosts. Jeremiah 15:16

Jeremiah takes in the LORD's words like food and rejoices because he bears the LORD's name. Jesus taught that His words are spirit and life, and disciples today take His name upon them.

How we know: the verse itself names Him

Jehovah the Deliverer and Redeemer

Redeem — to buy back, rescue, set free

And I will make thee unto this people a fenced brasen wall: and they shall fight against thee, but they shall not prevail against thee: for I am with thee to save thee and to deliver thee, saith the LORD. Jeremiah 15:20–21

Jehovah promises to save, deliver, and redeem His faithful servant from the wicked. Redeemer is one of Jesus Christ's central titles; the God who rescued Jeremiah is the one who redeems us all.

How we know: the verse itself names Him

• quotes Jeremiah 1:18-19 — Repeats the earlier promise: 'they shall not prevail against thee; for I am with thee... to deliver thee.'
• the same title in Isaiah 49:26 — 'I the LORD am thy Saviour and thy Redeemer.'
