And it came to pass, as he went into the house of one of the chief Pharisees to eat bread on the sabbath day, that they watched him. Luke 14:1–6
Jesus, watched closely by His critics, heals a sick man on the Sabbath. He shows that the Sabbath is His day for lifting people out of the pit, just as anyone would rescue an animal.

Jesus promises that quiet service to the poor is repaid at the resurrection of the just, the first resurrection that comes through His own victory over death.

The host of the great supper is God, and the feast is the kingdom He has prepared through Christ. Those first invited make excuses, so the poor, maimed, halt and blind are gathered in. The Lord uses this same picture in modern revelation for the marriage supper of the Lamb.

Jesus, walking toward Jerusalem and His own cross, asks disciples to put Him first above every other love and to carry their cross behind Him. Discipleship means counting the cost and forsaking all to follow Him.
