Psalms 136

Lord of lords

Lord of lords — the supreme Lord over every ruler

O give thanks unto the LORD; for he is good: for his mercy endureth for ever. Psalms 136:1–3

Jehovah is praised as God of gods and Lord of lords. The New Testament gives this very title to the Lamb, Jesus Christ.

How we know: Jehovah is the premortal Christ (Abraham 1:16; D&C 110:3–4)

  • alludes to Deuteronomy 10:17 — 'For the LORD your God is God of gods, and Lord of lords.'

Creator

To him who alone doeth great wonders: for his mercy endureth for ever. Psalms 136:4–9

The LORD is thanked as Creator of the heavens, the earth, and the lights. Scripture teaches that all things were made by the Word, Jesus Christ, under the Father.

Jehovah the Deliverer of Israel

Jehovah — the premortal Jesus Christ, the covenant God of Israel

To him that smote Egypt in their firstborn: for his mercy endureth for ever: Psalms 136:10–12

Jehovah brought Israel out of Egypt at the Passover with a strong hand. His deliverance from bondage prefigures Christ's deliverance from sin.

Passage through the Red Sea

To him which divided the Red sea into parts: for his mercy endureth for ever: Psalms 136:13–15

Paul taught that Israel's passage through the sea was a kind of baptism. Passing through the water to freedom foreshadows being saved through Christ by baptism.

Jehovah who led Israel

The One who led Israel through the wilderness was Jehovah. Paul says the spiritual Rock that followed Israel in the wilderness was Christ.

Redeemer

Redeemer — one who buys back and frees

Who remembered us in our low estate: for his mercy endureth for ever: Psalms 136:23–24

Jehovah remembers His people when they are low and redeems them. His enduring mercy is the heart of the Redeemer's work.
