There is a river, the streams whereof shall make glad the city of God, the holy place of the tabernacles of the most High. Psalms 46:4–5
A life-giving river flows through God's city, with God in its midst. John saw the river of the water of life flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb.
LORD of hosts — Jehovah, Lord of the armies of heaven
The LORD of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge. Selah. Psalms 46:7
The refrain names the LORD of hosts, the God of Jacob, who is with His people. Jehovah, the LORD of hosts, is the premortal Christ; 'with us' recalls the meaning of Emmanuel.
How we know: the verse itself names Him
He maketh wars to cease unto the end of the earth; he breaketh the bow, and cutteth the spear in sunder; he burneth the chariot in the fire. Psalms 46:9
The LORD ends war across the earth. Isaiah prophesied the same peace when the Lord judges the nations, fulfilled in Christ's millennial reign.
Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth. Psalms 46:10–11
God speaks in His own voice. The Lord Jesus Christ repeats these very words to the Saints in a latter-day revelation, showing He is the One speaking.
